Lets be honest, most things I learned in the 7th & 8th grades haven’t been used since I got out of school. I can’t remember the last time I needed to diagram a sentence at work.
I believe that some of those more specialized things should take place in college, while secondary education should be reserved for basics that you will use in nearly any environment after high school. For instance, how about teaching an english literature major how to diagram a sentence in college instead of requiring them to pay the university extra money take a bowling class for some bogus required physical
education course.
What a scam it is that a college student who’s paying for their education can’t simply take the courses pertaining to the degree or field of work they wish to enter. Instead, they have to waste their money on classes that have nothing to do with propelling them toward a successful future. Many times increasing student loan amounts and the debt burden they will carry for many years to come.
Oh, and by the way, many of those students who are forced to take irrelevant courses are on some sort of government scholarship program, which means that the money their forced to waste is Your Money.
I know people hold back from criticizing the education system because society seems to brand you as a teacher hater or one who doesn’t care about children but this system needs to be changed. Yesterday.
I have to disagree with you on this one, JC. Taking a variety of classes outside of your major, allows you to gain a broader base of knowledge and understanding. It shapes how you respond to life and allows you to connect with people from all different backgrounds and interests.
This might actually help you get ahead in your career, esp. if you’re in a field like marketing where it’s good to understand all types of target audiences.
just my 2 cents.
Good points Cari. Hard to argue with that.
