Every day I see businesses wasting the contact they have with current customers. Here’s an example.
The YMCA in Edmond OK sells bottled water at their front counter. For a long time, you’d pay $1 and get a 20oz bottle of filtered spring water that proudly carried the YMCA logo and location address. What a waste this was. Members who bought this water, were already paying to utilize the facility and obviously knew where it was located since they bought it there. The YMCA was missing a golden opportunity to tell it’s members about programs and current campaigns in which they were working to better their community. If the goal is just to profit from the sale of water, custom labels may not be the best choice. However, if your goal is to market to the person who drinks it, don’t waste this contact opportunity.
Lately, the YMCA has begun to change the approach to this opportunity. Now, when you purchase a bottle of water from the front counter, you’ll see on the label information about the Strong Kids Campaign, the Activate America proposition, youth sports sign-up dates and details. This is a much better use of this tool.
Does your business hand out water with your logo, when clients come in? If so, why not use that opportunity to let them know about a unique service you provide?
