Crying Blizzard… err, Wolf

I got upset at the local weather coverage during a snow storm last week. The local weather forecasters had been warning the locals of a coming snowstorm, and when it came, people were right in the middle of their holiday travels.  As car after car, was left stranded in the road that the 3ft snow drifts that 50mph winds blew up, I heard news personalities one after another say something like “I don’t understand why people were out when this came through.  We’ve been warning that this storm was coming, all week”.  What!?  How dare you!?

Here’s some background on this:

The Google Wave Rave.

If you’ve heard of Google’s new Wave tool, and you’re like me, you probably began to watch a 1hr 20min video and decided it just wasn’t worth it.  Well, Google must have taken notice because a few days ago, they posted a new 7min 52second video highlighting some of the highlights of Wave without all of the background and hype to drag it out.

I’ve posted the video below along with the ways I foresee me using Wave in my day-to-day work and social networking.

20 Things I Learned At The Oklahoma State Fair

  1. Fair skinned, white, bald guys like myself should wear sun screen.ruthie chicken on a stick
  2. Old worn out Chuck Taylor’s are not the best shoe for walking the fair for 5+ hours.
  3. Somehow, combining the smells of cigarette smoke, old deep fry oil, other people’s body odor, stale beer, and rotting trash remnants makes me hungry.
  4. That hunger can be satisfied by the offering of anything you can think of… being served on a stick.  Corny dogs, fried chicken, biscuits, chocolate covered cheese, mashed potatoes, pizza, frozen bananas… all on a stick.  You can’t beat that.

Who Are You Rude To?

I was driving along near my home yesterday and thought I’d do something I hadn’t done in a while: cold call on a business.  So, I pulled into a local dentist office to talk to them about the new MyDentistOklahoma.com site and how only one dentist would be allowed placement on this site for each zip code.  They are the dentist office near my home that my kids and I go to, so, I thought I might as well give them first shot at their zip code only about 24 hours after the site was completed.

Educational Waste

Lets be honest, most things I learned in the 7th & 8th grades haven’t been used since I got out of school.  I can’t remember the last time I needed to diagram a sentence at work.

I believe that some of those more specialized things should take place in college, while secondary education should be reserved for basics that you will use in nearly any environment after high school.  For instance, how about teaching an english literature major how to diagram a sentence in college instead of requiring them to pay the university extra money take a bowling class for some bogus required physical waste-money1education course.

My Kind of Teacher

I think my kid may have the coolest teach alive this year.  Halee is a fourth grader here in Edmond and I absolutely love herteacherteacher’s ideas about homework.  She says home time is for family.  She wants to guard her time with her family and so then she should guard the family time of her students.  Also, when she does give something to be given at home, it has a minimum of a 48 hour deadline.  No more late nights because of surprise large homework tasks when we had family plans.  How cool is that?

Why Does the Answer Exist?

I’d like to take a couple of days to celebrate the beginning of yet another school year.  Today I think I will speak to memorization.

I can’t stand this whole “memorize the answer” thing.  Listen closely people.  IT’S NOT AS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER AS TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE ANSWER EXISTS.

Let me explain.  If I hold a flash card stating 3×15 and my daughter shouts out “forty five”, and can shout that answer quickly from memory, is that as important as her understanding whyflash cards 3×15 equals forty five?  If she understands why, it will help her to find the answer to 6×15 and so on.  To many times though, our public school systems force our teachers to teach to a test and get their students to memorize answers rather than teaching them why the answer exists.

OKC’s Cry Baby Radio Host

I was driving down the road yesterday and hoping to find out some information on OU linebacker Mike Balogun as he fights a legal battle with the NCAA.  You can find out more by reading the NewsOK.com story here.

I’ll let you read the article for details on that, but anyway, while driving down the road, I figured the best place to find out the latest news as it came out might be the local sports talk radio station (WWLS).  I turned to the station (which I normally frequent only during football and basketball seasons) only to be reminded of why I don’t listen until opening week.

She’s In Labor

I was driving through a strip mall parking lot the other day and saw an old friend walking out of a store. I quickly pulled up to him and rolled down the window. After a few quick “hellos and how ya doings” he said… “I guess I’d better go. My wife’s in the truck and we’re on the way to the hospital.” What’s going on, I asked. To which he replied, “she’s in labor and we’re on the way to have the baby”.

WOW! Stopping in at the store was a real gutsy decision. My wife would’ve killed me. I’m sure when his bruises heal and everything plays out they’ll have a good story to tell.

Head Shaving Stats & Pics

Thanks to all of you who helped make this a special night for Caleb.

WOW! Over 40 heads got shaved last night at the Trichology Salon to raise over $1300 for Camp Cavett in honor of Caleb Pape and his courageous battle. I’ll keep updating this thread with stats as donations keep coming in.
If you’d still like to show your support, you can email me jc@AFHmarketing.com and I will work with you to make arrangements for your donation.
You may also post your bald head pic in the comments of this thread. Keep checking regularly because Caleb’s parents will be posing a ton of pics they took last night at the event.
